Data Ladies brings together women data enthusiasts from government, civil society, academia and the private sector to chat, discover and network on all things data.

Pollicy is holding its first meeting (of many to come) with a small group of ladies that have a keen interest in using data for their work, for research, for insights or just for fun. The aim of the meetup is to bring women together to explore different open-source tools, discuss the challenges within the statistics/data science field in Uganda, support each other in our data journeys and ultimately, to have a good time together.

Be sure to bring your laptops as we’ll begin our explorations into data from meeting 1!

4 PM: DESTINATION MARKETING – HOW TO BEST MARKET UGANDA AS A TOURIST DESTINATION? By TMC
Tourism Marketing Concepts, a Netherlands based company offers a wide range of services to consumer brands and governmental organisations. They offer Travel PR, Travel Marketing & Representation. Destination marketing, Branding and Advertising concepts, Media Planning and – Buying and they have a profound knowledge of the market and media landscape. This session is a must attend for everyone working in or affiliated with the tourism / hospitality sector in Uganda, be it hotel businesses or local tour operators.

5 PM: BRANDING AND COMMUNICATION IN A CHANGING MEDIA LANDSCAPE By WGreen.
W.Green is a Branded Communication Agency with a specialty in the area of sustainable fashion & lifestyle. They adopted a holistic branding approach, with a fresh look ahead and an innovative and critical vision for now and the future. They are familiar with old models and ideas but rather pioneer to find new models and solutions still applicable in the (near) future, such as vlogging and other social media approaches. This session is very interesting for young, trendy start-ups that aim to launch their brand or product with new audiences in mind.

6 PM: CREATING INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY by Jan Boelo & Afriek
Jan Boelo is an internationally known fashion designer from the Netherlands. He is currently exploring the aesthetics of the Karamojong and collaborating with Kampala based designers. He will talk about how to create a high fashion label and the journey of becoming an international known name.

Afriek is a Dutch Rwandan based company, bringing African heritage to the North of Europe. Currently they are exploring new styles for both fabric and print in collaboration with Kampala based designers. Afriek will talk about how to commercialise your product with a sound financial foundation.

Lydia Namubiru, Data Lead and Media Researcher at African Center for Media Excellence (ACME) will teach a 30 minute session on how to use Atlas, a free platform from Quartz for creating and sharing great charts. Lydia will also tell us more about the Open Data movement in Uganda: www.data.ug.

Angela Kiconco, Senior Statistician and Diana Nabukalu, Statistician from Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) will give give a few remarks on the importance of national data and how it can be made more available and understandable by the public.

We are incredibly excited to announce the upcoming DATA4CHAN.GE workshop to be held in partnership with DefendDefenders at Design Hub in Kampala. 

DATA4CHAN.GE brings talented people in the visual storytelling community together with human rights organisations that have fascinating original datasets and powerful stories to tell.  During our workshops interdisciplinary teams consisting of data researchers, coders, UX designers, graphic designers and human rights organisations create data visualisations and devise innovative advocacy strategies.

WHAT HAPPENS AT DATA4CHAN.GE?
During the workshops interdisciplinary teams consisting of data researchers, coders, UX designers, graphic designers and human rights organisations create data visualisations and devise innovative communication-based campaigns. DATA4CHAN.GE is a workshop where human rights organisations and the creative sector can collaborate to create data visualisations aimed at elevating public engagement and effective advocacy, which in turn could bring about real positive change.
